Russian craftsmen were always famous for their skill in artistic woodcarving. Over the centuries, from generation to generation, they passed on the secrets of their ability to make wooden spoons. In ancient times in the forests of the Trans-Volga region, not far from the village of Khokhloma of the Novgorod province, the first settlers were fugitives, hiding here from the persecutions of landlord oppression for the "old faith". Some of them were icon painters and craftsmen of the hand-written miniature. Infertile lands did not allow farmers to feed themselves, and refugees began to apply their skills, painting wooden utensils made by local craftsmen. Such a painting unknown to the village painted wonderfully a modest wooden kitchenware. The paints played golden and red rays of the sun. The glory of such festive dishes spread not only throughout the district, but also gained fame throughout Russia.
